League School Mourns Passing of Richard Vetstein

Richard Was Inspiration for School’s Founding Nearly 60 Years Ago

The League School of Greater Boston regrets to announce the passing of Richard Alan Vetstein, who was the son of League School co-founders Dr. Arnold and Leona Vetstein and the inspiration for the school’s founding in 1966. 

Richard, of Newton, passed away on August 17, 2023, at the age of 64.

Richard’s parents co-founded League School when he was only a child, shortly after he was diagnosed with autism. They created the school so he could receive the education and care he deserved, and through the years Richard continued to be an inspiration to hundreds of parents and students who heard his story and learned of his journey for independence and acceptance. 

Richard graduated from Newton North High School in 1978 and worked for most of his life. He held jobs at the Newton Marriott, Purity Supreme, Bread & Circus, Whole Foods, and Stop & Shop as a responsible and hard worker. He lived independently, and enjoyed listening to the Beatles, going out to museums and meals, riding his motor scooter, and writing birthday cards.

“The League School is what it is today because of Richard and his family, and we were very saddened to hear of his passing,” said League School CEO Larry Sauer. “Richard was an inspiration for so many as he overcame challenges, achieved great success and became a close friend to many. On behalf of all of us at League School our sympathies go out to Richard’s family.”
