James V. Major

Jim Major was the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of C766 Approved Private Schools (MAAPS) for 40 years, from 1989 to 2019. MAAPS is the statewide trade association in Massachusetts that represents provider organizations approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to provide special education and related services to public students, and members operate approximately 160 day and residential schools providing special education to over 7,000 students from Massachusetts, other states and countries.

Prior to his position at MAAPS, Jim was the Executive Director of the United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston for 10 years. Prior to UCP, he worked at the Massachusetts Office for Children (OFC) for four years in various capacities, including the OFC C766 Coordinator, during which Jim guided OFC’s policy and advocacy on special education. Jim has his master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University and was a Certified Association Executive with the American Society of Association Executives. He has served as Board member and President of the New England Society of Association Executives. He is currently a Board member of the Merrimac Heights Academy.
